Valley of the Butterflies

Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)

The Valley of the Butterflies, known locally as Petaloudes, is a unique natural wonder on Rhodes and a must-visit for nature lovers. Located about 25 km southwest of Rhodes Town, this lush, shaded valley is famous for its annual gathering of thousands of colorful butterflies, creating a magical, fairytale-like atmosphere in the heart of summer.

What to See & Do

  • Marvel at the Butterflies:
Between June and September, thousands of Panaxia Quadripunctaria butterflies cover the trees, rocks, and foliage, attracted by the valley’s sweet-scented Oriental Sweetgum trees. The sight is breathtaking—almost every surface shimmers with delicate wings.
  • Follow the Nature Trails:
Walk along shaded paths and wooden bridges winding through the cool, green valley. The trails are well-maintained and lead you past small waterfalls, streams, and pools where you can enjoy the soothing sounds of nature.
  • Visit the Butterfly Museum:
At the entrance to the valley, the small but informative museum offers fascinating insights into the life cycle of butterflies and the valley’s unique ecosystem. There are also displays of local flora and fauna.
  • Climb to the Monastery of Kalopetra:
Follow the path up to the historic Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra, founded in 1782. The climb is worth it for panoramic views of the valley and the surrounding countryside.
  • Enjoy a Picnic:
There are several rest areas along the trails where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, especially outside the peak butterfly season.

Fun Facts & Tips

  • The butterflies seen here are actually a species of moth, the Jersey Tiger Moth (Panaxia Quadripunctaria).
  • Please do not disturb or touch the butterflies—clapping or loud noises can harm them by forcing them to fly and waste precious energy needed for reproduction.
  • The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors.
  • The valley can be humid and slippery, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes.
  • Outside the butterfly season, the valley is still a beautiful and tranquil destination for a nature walk.
